Tanks for the Memories

On a dull and drizzly Pembroke Dock this morning (Friday 25th July
2008) the Army were due to repossess the Chieftain Tank, that had
been presented to the Town almost 10 years ago. Ex-Councillor and then
Mayor David Jones was there all those years ago to receive it on behalf
of the Town and witnessed it placed with pride on its plinth in Western
Way. But due to technical difficulties with the tank recovery vehicle
the operation has had to be postponed, it is thought it may be September
before they can remove the Tank.
After months
of attempts by the Town Council to find the cash to restore and make
safe this proud symbol of The Dock's long association with the Army, the
newly elected
Council voted at the last council meeting by a "10 to 3" majority to give it back to the Army
This is not the first
military artefact to be given away by the Town many years ago a
Sunderland presented to the Town by the Royal Australian Air Force, was
given to the Royal Air Force and now stands proud in the museum at
Hendon. Reports reveal that several other items have also been
"liberated" over the years.
So with heavy heart we
publish this to morn the inevitable loss of more of Pembroke Docks fragile heritage, and leave you with
this photo record to celebrate its arrival and morn its departure, when
it leaves |
