Park staff saddle up for pedal power

Two wheels was the favoured mode of transport for staff at Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority yesterday (Thursday 19th June 2008).

A total of 17 staff cycled to work at either the Authority’s head office in Pembroke Dock or the Cilrhedyn Woodland Centre in the Gwaun Valley during National Bike Week.

On arrival they tucked into a delicious healthy breakfast laid on by colleagues to ensure none of their good work was undone.
One of the organisers Susanne Hooper – who rode to Pembroke Dock from Haverfordwest – said: “We had double the number turn out this year than last, and because of the terrible weather the night before some of us had to contend with lots of debris, including two fallen trees en route from Haverfordwest. But the sun came out especially for us and breakfast slipped down very nicely. It was a great way to start the day.”

The National Park Authority runs a Green Travel scheme which encourages staff to use alternatives to the car when travelling to and from work and on Authority business. This includes buy-a-bike loans, the chance to borrow an electric bike and a monthly draw for staff who regularly lift-share, walk or cycle to work.

The scheme is one of a number of ‘green’ initiatives by the Authority, which also includes the installation of solar panels and a biomass boiler burning wood pellets at the Llanion Park headquarters, along with a rainwater harvesting system. The Authority holds a Level Four Green Dragon environmental award.
