Sunderland Collection Fly's in

A Sunderland of an Australian squadron in distress at Pembroke Dock
just one of many images in the hugely significant Andrew Hendrie
Collection.
A
major collection of photographs belonging to one of Britain’s foremost
aviation authors has been donated to the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust. The
photographs, mainly featuring the famous Sunderland flying boat, were
collected by the late Andrew Hendrie. A wartime Sunderland wireless
operator, Mr Hendrie wrote several books including an authoritative
history on the Short Sunderland.
His
widow, Evelyn, wished to see the collection remain together at an
appropriate aviation location and she made contact with the Pembroke
Dock Trust via the Catalina Society.
Now the collection - numbering several hundred images and covering the
Sunderland’s many wartime and peacetime roles - has been sent to the
Pembroke Dock Trust which plans to raise a Mark I Sunderland from the
Milford Haven waterway.
Former Sunderland signaller and Trust volunteer Ron Boreham is delighted
with the acquisitions. “This is a wonderful collection and of great
historical importance, both locally and internationally. I have even
found photos of 230 Squadron aircraft which I flew on during the early
1950s,” he said. “It is now part of the Trust’s ever growing archive and
we intend to digitally copy all the images which will become available
in due course to historians, researchers and family interest groups. The
photos will be acknowledged as from the Andrew Hendrie Collection."
The
Trust is very grateful to David Legg, Editor of the Catalina Society’s
quarterly magazine, for arranging for the collection to be delivered to
Pembroke Dock.
